What is Gastroenterology?
Gastroenterology is “a branch of medicine concerned with the structure, functions, diseases, and pathology of the stomach and intestines,” according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Gastroenterology encompasses the entire digestive tract, including the gall bladder.
What a Gastroenterologist Does
A gastroenterologist has a very clear understanding of ailments affecting the organs of the digestive tract, including the stomach, esophagus, colon, intestines, gall bladder, pancreas, and liver. Because their specialty focuses on many different organs, gastroenterologists treat a wide range of ailments such as GERD, hemorrhoids, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease, liver disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and cancers of the digestive tract.
While gastroenterologists are not surgeons, they are trained in endoscopic examinations of the esophagus, stomach, and small and large intestine. They may also work closely with surgeons to help select the best operation for the patient and provide follow-up care relevant to the patient’s digestive trouble.
Education Requirements
After earning an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) or D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy) physicians must complete a 3-year Internal Medicine residency. Once this step has been completed, they must complete another residency in gastroenterology. This residency is very rigorous and hands-on, granting the trainee the opportunity to study under, and learn directly from, experienced doctors. Once their residencies are complete physicians can apply for certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
